_4_11_ كپه داغ

Review
Virology in an understandable manner
Well, let's see, molecular virology is definitely a hard-to understand science. Fortunately, for begginers like me, A.J Cann wrote this book. I think it is an awesome one, but it has its drawbacks.
Pros: Easy to read ( i mean, critical concepts, especially genetics, come up very clearly ), relatively easy to understand, and final review questions that really stick concepts in your mind. Also excellent prospective view about why molecular virology is important.
Cons: Not enough pictures. Imagination is a useful tool, but not that much ! This is why this superb book deserves only 4 stars. Still, it is worth the money, and belongs to the shelf of every virologist or infectious disease expert/fan/student

Principles and Practice of Clinical Virology, 4th Edition
by: Arie J. Zuckerman , Jangu E. Banatvala , J. R. Pattison
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
Number Of Pages: 800
Publication Date: 1999-12-13
ISBN / ASIN: 0471973408
EAN: 9780471973409
Book Description
Virology is that branch of microbiology concerned with viruses and diseases. These groups of minute infectious agents are, with certain exceptions (e.g., poxviruses) lack an independent metabolism and replicate only within living host cells. Like living organisms, they reproduce with genetic continuity and also mutate. Normally classified into three subgroups on the basis of host specificity (bacterial viruses, animal viruses, and plant viruses), they are also classified by origin, mode of transmission, symptoms produced, and where first located.
Download Description
"The knowledge and practice of clinical virology continues to expand. This new fifth edition has thirty-six comprehensive chapters, each of which has been extensively revised or rewritten, with the addition of new colour plates.
This updated version takes into account knowledge accumulated in molecular biology with its applications for laboratory diagnosis, immunisation and antiviral chemotherapy. Each chapter highlights the clinical features and epidemiological patterns of infection. Similarly, in response to the global concern of the threat posed by new viruses, a new chapter on Emerging Infections is included.
There is also new material on Hospital Acquired Infections, including some advice relating to SARS, that will be of benefit to those dealing with the day-to-day management of patients in hospital

Medical Virology, Fourth Edition

Medical Virology, Fourth Edition
By D. E. White, Frank J. Fenner
Publisher: Academic Press
Number Of Pages: 603
Publication Date: 1994-01-15
ISBN / ASIN: 0127466428
EAN: 9780127466422
Book Description
Medical Virology first appeared in 1970 and was immediately hailed as a classic. The Fourth Edition has been completely updated, substantially rewritten, and considerably expanded. Acknowledging that today's students possess a more sophisticated background of molecular and cellular biology, the book is pitched a little higher than was the third edition. Nevertheless, it maintains the exceptionally high standards of the three previous editions, including the now famous user-friendly style. Hundreds of instructive diagrams and succinct tables smooth the path for the reader. Extensive lists of recent authoritative reviews at the end of each of the 36 chapters simplifies the reader's entry into the scientific literature. Throughout, the focus is on fundamental principles, mechanisms and basic facts, rather than on overwhelming detail.
Part I of the book, expanded to over 400 pages, comprises in effect a self-contained overview of the Principles of Virology. Part II, entitled Viruses of Humans, deals comprehensively with all the families of human viruses. Extensive coverage is given to the molecular biology of the viruses and of viral replication, pathogenesis and immunity, clinical features of all important diseases caused by all viruses affecting humans, the latest laboratory diagnostic methods, epidemiology and control, including chemotherapy and vaccines.
This lucid and concise yet comprehensive text is admirably suited to the needs not only of advanced students of science and medicine but also particularly of postgraduate students, teachers, and research workers in all areas of virology.
Key Features
* Molecular biology of viruses and viral replication
* Pathogenesis and immunity
* Latest laboratory diagnostic methods
* Clinical features of human viral diseases
* Vaccines and chemotherapy
* Epidemiology and control

Advanced Techniques in Diagnostic Microbiology

Advanced Techniques in Diagnostic Microbiology
by: Yi-Wei Tang & Charles W. Stratton
Publisher: Springer
Number Of Pages: 540
Publication Date: 2006-06-16
ISBN / ASIN: 0387297413
EAN: 9780387297415
Book Description
Clinical microbiologists are engaged in the field of diagnostic microbiology to determine whether pathogenic microorganisms are present in clinical specimens collected from patients with suspected infections. If microorganisms are found, these are identified and susceptibility profiles, when indicated, are determined. During the past two decades, technical advances in the field of diagnostic microbiology have made constant and enormous progress in various areas, including bacteriology, mycology, mycobacteriology, parasitology, and virology. The diagnostic capabilities of modern clinical microbiology laboratories have improved rapidly and have expanded greatly due to a technological revolution in molecular aspects of microbiology and immunology. In particular, rapid techniques for nucleic acid amplification and characterization combined with automation and user-friendly software have significantly broadened the diagnostic arsenal for the clinical microbiologist. The conventional diagnostic model for clinical microbiology has been labor-intensive and frequently required days to weeks before test results were available. Moreover, due to the complexity and length of such testing, this service was usually directed at the hospitalized patient population. The physical structure of laboratories, staffing patterns, workflow, and turnaround time all have been influenced profoundly by these technical advances. Such changes will undoubtedly continue and lead the field of diagnostic microbiology inevitably to a truly modern discipline. Advanced Techniques in Diagnostic Microbiology provides a comprehensive and up-to-date description of advanced methods that have evolved for the diagnosis of infectious diseases in the routine clinical microbiology laboratory. The book is divided into two sections. The first techniques section covers the principles and characteristics of techniques ranging from rapid antigen testing, to advanced antibody detection, to in vitro nucleic acid amplification techniques, and to nucleic acid microarray and mass spectrometry. Sufficient space is assigned to cover different nucleic acid amplification formats that are currently being used widely in the diagnostic microbiology field. Within each technique, examples are given regarding its application in the diagnostic field. Commercial product information, if available, is introduced with commentary in each chapter. If several test formats are available for a technique, objective comparisons are given to illustrate the contrasts of their advantages and disadvantages. The second applications section provides practical examples of application of these advanced techniques in several "hot" spots in the diagnostic field. A diverse team of authors presents authoritative and comprehensive information on sequence-based bacterial identification, blood and blood product screening, molecular diagnosis of sexually transmitted diseases, advances in mycobacterial diagnosis, novel and rapid emerging microorganism detection and genotyping, and future directions in the diagnostic microbiology field. We hope our readers like this technique-based approach and your feedback is highly appreciated. We want to thank the authors who devoted their time and efforts to produce their chapters. We also thank the staff at Springer Press, especially Melissa Ramondetta, who initiated the whole project. Finally, we greatly appreciate the constant encouragement of our family members through this long effort. Without their unwavering faith and full support, we would never have had the courage to commence this project

Encyclopedia of Virology

Encyclopedia of Virology, 3-Volume Set
Number Of Pages: 1997
Publication Date: 1999
ISBN / ASIN: 0122270304
Description
In recent years, progress in the field of virology has advanced at an unprecedented rate. Issues such as AIDS have brought the subject firmly into the public domain and its study is no longer confined solely to specialist groups. The Encyclopedia of Virology is the largest single reference source of current virological knowledge. It is also the first to bring together all aspects of the subject for a wide variety of readers. Unique in its use of concise 'mini-review' articles, the material covers biological, molecular, and medical topics concerning viruses in animals, plants, bacteria, and insects. More general articles focus on the effects of viruses on the immune system, the role of viruses in disease, oncology, gene therapy, and evolution, plus a wide range of related topics. Drawing on the latest research, the editors have produced the definitive source for both specialist and general readers. Easy-to-use and meticulously organized, the Encyclopedia of Virology clarifies and illuminates one of the most complex areas of contemporary study. It will prove an invaluable addition to libraries, universities, medical and nursing schools, and research institutions around the world. The editors and the over 250 expert contributors to this encyclopedia are to be commended for the fantastic work they have done in producing a resource that is valuable to both undergraduates and specialists. The encyclopedia features 270 alphabetically arranged articles discussing topics that range from specific viruses and virus groups to diagnostic techniques and the history of virology. Animal, insect, plant, and bacteriologial viruses are all covered. Each entry includes a self-contained summary of the topic at hand and provides both recommendations for further reading and a list of other relevant entries. Many of the articles have a section on future perspectives that shows the direction of current research. In addition, there are cross references and an extensive index. While expensive, this encyclopedia is the only comprehensive work on virology to have appeared in the past few years. The field is changing so quickly that finding concise, understandable information in a single source is difficult. Other current works include Bernard Fields's Fields Virology (Raven, 1990. 2d ed.) and Fundamental Virology (Raven, 1991). (Fields is a contributor to this volume as well.) These are both textbooks aimed at educating the virologist or physician, while the encyclopedia is geared toward a wider audience. Recommended for academic and medical libraries.
Audience
Animal and plant virologists, medical virologists, microbiologists, immunologists, pathologists, clinicians, health care workers, nurses, researchers and technicians in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries, and undergraduate and graduate students in the biological and biomedical sciences
